apt-get and synaptic are just awsome.
just download apt-get install it.
in command, as root, type
apt-get update
apt-get install synaptic
and you can install synaptic, which is GUI for apt-get.
it's just awsome.....
it's so much easier that plane old apt-get.
synaptic does help us....
also, i had so much trouble installing xmame, using apt-get to install gxmame was so easy, u just click buttons couple times and it's installed on ur linux, it's just awsomE~!!!!

I would figure it wouldn't matter. Probably just telling you it made a log somewhere.

What would be the packages (libraries etc..) I'd need to get it working on a Redhat or other non-Debian machine? I tried doing that on a Mandrake machine but somehow it couldn't access the ftp update servers because of a "Extra junk at end of file error" . Thanks :)

The easiest way to get APT and the front end Synaptic is to just use the command line but if you want to just grab the RPM for it then go to http://freshrpms.net/. You can Download and install it there. I was very impressed that Synaptic after you install it actually puts an entry in your menu under System tools I think... You do not see that happen in linux very often. APT is very configurable as well... You can just update packages that you already have installed too which is cool. It does a lot of the stuff the RH Network does but SO MUCH MORE... If anyone needs help installing or has any questions about APT feel free to email me directly... You can reach me here or @ TommyPickles@cfl.rr.com...

i don't know if they have apt-get support for mandrake.....
redhat does, that's why i'm using apt-get...
does any one know if mandrake also has apt-get support?

my first linux was mandrake, and i really didn't like it, so i switched to redhat, and it's awsome, simple easy to use, especially not bloated like mandrake.. so it's much faster...
y don't you just switch to redhat?
it's really easy to use just like mandrake.

also you can install synaptic, GUI for apt-get by
as root in command

apt-get update
apt-get install synaptic

after that u can use synaptic to install or see which packages r available for installing or upgrading... etc... ti's so easy to use, ( you will have a synaptic button somewhere on ur menu, for redhat9 i have it in system settings)

When i used Redhat, apt-get always would break things :\ apt-get on debian r0x though ! Best binary package manager out there. Portage is still the best though :)

I just installed apt-get and Synaptic on my RH 9 box, worked like a charm....between Synaptic and a broadband connection life is good.

Any RPM-based distro should be fine with apt-get - just use apt-rpm.
urpmi and another little known package manager called yum are also available for most distros.
Still love Portage though:)

Gotta love Portage... but in Debian I use aptitude instead of synaptic :)
