when clicking on a .pls file type on the Internet

(streaming audio)

when I click the file it wants to download somewhere on my computer rather than start streaming mp3.....

I looked in PREFERENCES/FILE TYPES/AUDIO

Default action is: xmms

Have you tried opening the file through xmms instead of double clicking on it.
You need to download the file for it to start streaming.

.pls files are streamed from the server with a buffer

Where are you trying to download it from?
The audio files I have are from http://www.virginradio.co.uk/ /listen now, they have mp3 and ogg streams but when you download the file it's called live.pls. Give those a try and see if they work.

my web radio station that I built URL:
http://schmoobeedrew.hopto.org

once a member you would have access to this file for streaming MP3 at 128 kbps (CD quality)

http://schmoobeedrew.servemp3.com:8000/listen.pls
that is what my winamp has been grabbing ,,,, and I'm told that xmms can listen to MP3 streams as well

so let me know if ya can grab my stations stream with your xmms?

the live.pls just tried to download rather than stream

thnx

It works fine, im currently using a mac at the moment with iTunes, so you can add that to your apps that it'll work with.

Xmms should work, all the radiostations that I use for iTunes work with Xmms.

is this correct

rpm -e xmms

should i try uninstall/install?

it needs to grab the file type,,,, in winamp you go into preference and ADD .pls file types on older versions

can't find this option with xmms,,,,

day two,,,, with linux.... love this OS .... REDHAT

wish I had of installed years ago

As you use RedHat did you download the mp3 plugin for xmms? that might be the reason why it doesn't work. If not it's here http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/9/xmms-mp3/xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.fr1.i386.rpm
You don't need to add anything in your preferneces, just right click on xmms/open and select the .pls file, it then should play.

the mp3 pluggin must be installed already as I am listening to .mp3 files on my drive...... but still no .pls file type,,,,,

is it hard to uninstall and reinstall?

or is that just a bad win32 habit I have?

is it hard to uninstall and reinstall?
No it's not hard it's easy, but I don't see why uninstalling then reinstalling will have any effect. I use RedHat9 and it works fine for me.

Have you tried clearing your playlist in xmms and then tried opening the .pls file, it won't show up as a .pls file it will probably show up as "SchmoobeeDrew - Vancouvers Electronica Web Radio"

Just gone home for lunch, downloaded the listen.pls file on my linux box, opened xmms, right-clicked on xmms, clicked play file, selected listen.pls file from my home directory, buffers then plays.
I have the base installation of xmms but with one exeption the mp3 plugin. So i don't understand why you can't get it to work.
BTW. I downloaded the file from the second link that you gave me.
