I just started up a new computer I built with a Soltek motherboard. I first installed Win98 so I could continue playing Morrowind. While I was downloading updated chipset drivers, I was wondering- does the linux kernel, say version 2.4.20-18, take advantage of faster frontside buses? This motherboard uses a VIA KT400 chipset that can support 333/266/200 MHz system buses. Also, it can support DDR 400MHz Memory if you use the recommended memory modules.
So I found this site which relieved my mind a lot,
Linux Hardware (http://www.linuxhardware.org/Features/03/04/16/1610236.shtml) .
I know my rig nowhere near that Pentium 800 MHz FSB, But it is a lot cheaper ($180 for both the motherboard and an Athlon XP 2500 Barton CPU) so I can still pay the rent. And I guess it really falls on the graphics card to help out on the speed.
