Is there a shell that has all of the DOS commands and little more, but that runs on Linux? I am not looking for a DOS emulator. I am look for a DOS clone. I've been reading a DOS book and have had a DOS partition and it seems to be a lot funner and easier to use DOS because it is so much simpler than all of the complex Linux shells when it still gets the job done. I'd much rather be hitting <tab> <tab> to see as list of 200 programs and 50 commands than see 200 programs and 1544 commands half of which I'll never have the time to read about much less learn how to use.

I hope someone can help you. I imagine a lot of folks would like a Dos shell that ran Dos stuff in linux but wasn't a Dos emulator.
In the highly likely event you don't find one, I posted some time ago on HOW I DID IT, or whatever they call that forum on this URL, a detailed instruction on how to set up Dosemu using Microsoft DOS 5.0; 6.0; 6.22 or whatever, in linux.
Frankly, I haven't tried it recently, due to other problems, but will one of these days, to see if it still works with later versions of Dosemu.
If you find the posting, specify HOW I DID IT, and the word dosemu, in the justlinux search box, and it will be an attachment to the posting. Download it and use it as an instruction manual, if dosemu hasn't been revised so it doesn't work any more, it is actually very simple.

I don't know of any such emulator. But in case you do find one, remember that you're gaining some ease of use in exchange for losing a tremendous amount of flexibility. One of the best features of Linux (IMHO) is its vast "software toolbox".
EDIT: Well, there's always dosemu, but you said that's not what you were looking for.

I certainly understand what he wants. Alas, it's DOS, not linux. The concept of a Dos shell for linux that isn't based on a dos emulator seems to be an oxymoron.
(I am saying this, because when one makes a definite statement about linux, he is soon shown to be an ***, so by saying it doesn't exist as a definite statement, I am helping our friend find what he needs. Hee, hee.)
Oh, oh! Wait a minute! Couldn't he use a whole bunch of aliases to make some of the basic DOS commands run linux commands?
Copy = cp seems simple enough, but copy simply doesn't have the list of options cp does, nor is it structured the same.
Ditto for del = rm.
As I write further, I keep thinking he simply doesn't like linux, that he should stick to a dos partition.
As far as all the unused commands, this is a red herring. Nobody needs to use unwanted commands. Just pretend they are not there. Or for the really brave, delete the un-needed command files.
Yes, it seems that he simply doesn't want to learn linux. Any other opinions on this?
When I started with linux, I typed 'a' (through z) at the command prompt, then hit tab. I took a notebook, copied all the commands, then ran back through them all with "man command" and jotted down what the command did. It took a lot of time, but I learned a lot.
And, I think there is a How-to on this URL with basic commands listed. Yes??
In any case, I can't guarantee no one has ever tried to create a true dos shell on linux, but I sure have never heard of them, and will be interested to hear from them.

One question I have -- How exactly is DOS simpler than Linux? You can't really do much with just DOS, can you? To learn the corresponding Linux commands, I wouldn't think it wouldn't take very long. :)

DOS is simpler if you have learned it and never used Linux before. The commands are different but do the same thing...
Lucky for you I knew a guy that was working on exactly what you are talking about wanting
http://lindostos.sourceforge.net/
LinDOS is what he called it, it hasen't been updated in almost a year, but what I saw last year was pretty bizzare
Check it out and let me know what you think, and I'll let him know :)

Not sure how funner or easier it would be to type DOS commands, but what's the point? How do you know you don't need them?
