Wow... I have installed slack on a few Duron 1.3 ghz systems before, but a p233? I just installed Slack (9.0 using reiserFS) on a P233 with 96 meg ram and a 110 MB swap. Unbelivable.... It smokes my athlon 2.0 (with mandrake) as far as boot, and runs quicker Than Win98 did (when it was on there some time ago) Now I gotta see if it installed my sound....

i just installed slack9 again, with all the packages selected, and got a new user added just fine... however, when i went to install the NVIDIA drivers, it couldnt find precompiled kernel, yadda, yadda, yadda...
so, i d/l and compile the 2.5.70 kernel from source... reboot into that.... stil no go... i try to startx, and KDE 3.x starts up.. no problem... but, no mouse, no sound, no happiness.
any help at all would be appreciated. i have a logitech 2-button optical wheelmouse hooked up to my usb port, and a philips pcs-605 sound card that peanut detected just perfectly.
so...
fun.

Remeber to add the line to your /etc/X11/XF86Config at the mouse pointer part to enable the scroll wheel:
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
I have the same or a very similar mouse to you (PS/2 Connection), i was using the 'IMPS2' protcol and '/dev/mouse' device.
Not too shure about your graphics or sound.

Did you remember to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ?
Personally i dont think you had to recompile your kernel to the unstable version to get your graphics to work. :s what nvdriver file did you use from nvidia?
On another note, does anyone know of a 'blank' distro? (similar to how you get windoze with no progs)

About those nvidia drivers you said you were trying to install. Im pretty sure that it was the kernel headers that you where missing.
Those are to be found somewhere on the internet (google it, or ask on some irc help channels, shouldnt be to hard). But the thing is, after you have installed those, and if the nvidia run file still can't find your kernel headers, you have to make a symlink, i dont remember exactly the commands, but dude, this is not something worth compiling a new kernel for, once you know how it's done, you will be up an running in a few, good luck :)
( PS. just private message me or come to #justlinux on irc.freenode.org if you need some extra help with that ****)

plonka2000:
A kernel recompile was not needed.
To install the Nvidia drivers type the command below as root.
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4362.run -kernel-include=/usr/include
More indepth info can be found in at the Nvidia forums.
deanrantala:
To view modules in use type lsmod as root.

after a year using mdk9 i just installed slack yesterday and for some reason it didn't install kde or gnome even though i did a full install. maybe i should have done expert and chose my apps to install. so here i am installing everything from source and working in TWM. this is fun (not). actually i will learn quite a bit from this. at least this time i got the damn X to work. also i will have an uber box since it will be fully uptimized to what i want.
deanrantala,
you can check to see if your drivers are installed by looking here
/lib/modules/[kernel version]/sound/drivers/
i am sure that is the location.
i am trying to install my sound drivers also. i got a turtle beach montego (au8820) {pain in the *** to work with but i am too cheap to go buy another one}
good work/luck on the install.

Does anyone have a clue as to where you can go for linux drivers?
sourceforge just redirected me to (forfront tech) a site that CHARGES for it's drivers!
Google only spews out a list of modem drivers.
Lots of good sites showing "supported hardware" but none tell you how to support it.
freshmeat redirected me to some project totaly irelevent to drivers.
Is there a "driverguide.com" for linux drivers that doesn't redirect you to 30 million places?

In order to get the Nvidia drivers working go to www.slackware.com then click on "get slack" chose a download mirror go to version 9.0 then the folder "slackware" then the folder "k'" then locate the folder "kernel" and then download the source it will be about 32 megs once it is downloaded use pkgtool to install it and then you will be in your happy place.
As far as the sound card goes head to the "rc.modules" (err i think that is the one) and look for a line that references your flavor of sound card and uncomment that line. be sure to check your volume in KDE if that is your desktop.

Definitely see if it installed your kernel headers. If it didn't just reinstall the source for your kernel in /usr/src. The kernel source has all of the headers you'd need for your version of the kernel. Also, why did you go for 2.5.70? I'd recommend sticking with 2.4.20 or 2.4.21, as the 2.5.x series is more a development series...
To deanrantala:
You can check on what drivers are loaded at that current moment by running lsmod as root. Also, es1370 works in Slackware. you'll have to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to load the appropriate sound module. I think it's actually called es1370...

Yeah, I got sound going, the mousewheel working, and I even got my box dialing AOL (and conecting) properly.I have really come to like slack for it's (it might sound strange) *simplicity*. Especially how all the main scripts are in one neat little place, and everything else is under /etc. Also run fast as hell. Only thing I am working on now is successfully re-compiling the kernel (last attempt was a mightmare - was also my first time)
