How are these online petitions expected to stop anything?

Correct me if I am wrong, but real petitions in the U.S. (since MS and Palladium are in the U.S.!) are only for voting age, legal citizens and they must make up 1% of those who voted in the past election. More than half of these are out of the U.S., a majority of these people are (no doublt) minors, and half of the people didn't even post their real or full name.

It is good to hear a voice than to do nothing.....I say we must organise worldwide protests against tcpa and palladium!

If tcpa is no longer an option you can just turn it of....I will move to the mac! Freedom on the computer is a precious good...

The point of the online petitions are not so much to STOP something from happening. It's more of a way to show these companies that there are numerous people in the computing world that are against the idea. It shows that the people who sign the petition WILL NOT support the companies that decide to use this technology to invade on our privacy and our rights.

Companies are all about making money and if they see that money will be lost by moving to a new technology they may think twice about doing it. Obviously it's going to take more than 1,000 or so signatures to make something like that happen but it could happen. Point is, everyone in the open-source community MUST TAKE A STAND NOW to make sure that these things do not take away the rights of the open source community.

I have read in German computer literature that it's not clear wether TCPA and Palladium could be implemented under current US laws and the lobbying in congress and senat has begun. Experts think that the decision the authorities in the US make will have a significant impact on how the EU is going to decide later.

I suggest you talk to your congressman, too.

And yes, this petition has been posted multiple times already, in case anyone is wondering. You could probably search for the URL and find a couple of threads (if nothing else, search for *petitiononline* and pick this petition's threads out of the 20-30 that come back)

I hate to be a buzzkill, but if anything is going to happen that will make Microsoft and Intel change their minds about carrying out the Palladium effort, serious action must be taken.

In short...

1.) True support must be rallied in both companies that will oppose Palladium and the TCPA, and ordinary users who will be willing to vote with their wallets and not buy any sort of Palladium-enabled product, or Windows release that supports Palladium (a massive Windows boycott should've started with WinXP or earlier, but people either don't care or don't know any alternatives).

2.) Users must stop buying Microsoft products all together...that includes not only Windows and Office, but their keyboards, mice, and anything manufactured by a Microsoft subsidiary (which means most gamers are out of luck because any game protected with SafeDisc copy protection is supporting a Microsoft subsidiary, namely C-Dilla).

3.) Citizens from all around the US must start writing congressmen and senators en masse; followed by en masse letters to Microsoft and Intel themselves protesting TCPA and Palladium.

4.) And finally...the biggest test of the character of the PC user world - we must all take a hit for the team and actually DO these things instead of talking about them. Yes, it will be hard to not buy that hot piece of hardware or software, but the prize at the end will be more than worth the temporary inconvienience.

NOW TESTIFY! :D

Why BUY software in windows?

Let me be straight in this one...there is only ONE law in winnie:"viva kazaa!" :D  :D

well actually it's kazaa-lite, but that does not sounds as good :p :p :p

Actually, conumers will be the ones who decide what happens with it, unless some sort of antitrust suit takes place, or the ACLU gets involved. If people just buy it like they did with the MS activation crap then the privacy invasion will spread....Personally, I am more worried about what the RIAA, MPAA and SCO or going to do to the technology industry if they get their collective ways.

what is RIAA or MPAA?

BTW: filing petitions against TCPA could soon become a pointless task as the members of the TCPA consortium migrate to the new TCG (Trusted Computing Group). Looks like they abandon ship after the TCPA image is connected with too many bad news.
