Just how secure is applications like Xlock, KDM, and whatever KDE uses to lock up the screen? If people learn that I use Linux will they be able to break through these programs and get into my computer while I am away? I'm trying to secure my computer for college next fall.

If you take appropriate boot measures they will be fine.

Theres no secret trick to getting by GDM, XDM, or KDM. While in session xlock usually suffices fine, but make sure you find the option to disable the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace while doing so.

I have it setup so that if you hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace at anytime it brings you back to KDM.
