Welcome aboard! :)

In answer to your question: No, there is no other way.

But don't worry, it's not that hard, and the linux-wlan drivers are extremely well-documented. So much so that you might easily have been able to get it finished between the time you posted your message and my reply.

If you have any specific questions about the procedure (i.e. don't just say "how do I do it") post away and we'll try to help as best we can. :) You'd also have to tell us the model number of your card.

it doesnt matter what model number all linksys cards run on the prism chip which the wlan driver is based on
i have 3 computers with linksys wirless cards they all work fine

read the README files and INSTALL files ...

go to wlan driver website at
http://www.linux-wlan.com/linux-wlan/index.html

all linksys cards run on the prism chip No, this is not correct. For instance the WMP11 cards moved over to the Broadcom chipset in the summer of 2002. This is mentioned all over the place, e.g. http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2003-February/001515.html.

Thus, if he has v2.7 or later of the WMP11 card, it will *not* work with the linux-wlan drivers, as there is no working Linux support for the Broadcom chipset at the current time AFAIK.

Anyway, it's just common sense to post hardware details when posting about a hardware-related problem.
