I have RH 9 running ok with an old Trident 3DImage9750 agp card, but it doesn't go better than 800x600. I bought a Diamond Stealth 3, 32 meg (it's on Redhat's compatibility list for v. 8), but can't figure out how to get it to work. I would like 1024x768, and my 17 inch monitor already supports this resolution.

I have on onboard vga plug, but never figured out how to get it working in any graphical mode, just text. I have an ECSK7vmm mobo with a VIA KM266 northbridge and VT8235 Southbridge for 4xAGP. I emailed the manufactorer and they aren't interested in supporting Linux (I guess I research the mobo more next time before I buy.)

Anyway, when I put the trident card in, Kudzu can detect it, and after rebooting, it works. Kudzu thinks the diamond card is some other card and doesn't work automatically.

So I put the Diamond card in, I hit ctrl-alt-F2, to get to a text mode, and go to set up xfree86 with: redhat-config-xfree86. I set it to the proper Diamond card (S540), but get no video at all on reboot.

Any suggestions? TIA!

does RH9 successfully detect you monitor?

if it gets your monitor wrong, it can affect your top resolution because it thinks incorrectly that your monitor cannot handle higher res.

you can manually select your monitor, or 'generic' resolution.

but be careful ... this can blow up older monitors, literally!

No. When I go into the Moniter settings form, I click on Compac, but it doesn't take. The "Probe monitor" button is disabled. It has a vertical and horizontal sync with numbers tho.

So I just restarted the system and will see what it brings up. How to stop and restart x? When I log out, then log back in, I don't know if x restarted, but I think not because I never lost a graphical window. I went to a virtual console, and told it: "startx" but it told me one was already running.

Thanks for your time. I was able to get it to recognize the Diamond card by putting in the install cd and running it til I selected what I wanted... tho I don't know why I wasn't able to select it when it booted from the hard drive.

Is there some other way (some app) to select the monitor with model number? I have the color set to thousands of colors. But it remains at 800x600 when I go back in.
