Hi all,

I really need the help of all you guys on this one...

Until recently I have been able to burn many CDs successfully using burncenter (which is a wrapper around cdrecord & co - top light weight app)

2 to 3 weeks ago I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.20.13.8 & 2.4.20.18.8 since then I've had zero luck with cd burning... (at the time of fixating the cd the whole machine freezes - the caps-lock and scroll-lock LEDs on the keyboard starts blinking, no mouse, no keyboard response.... HARD REBOOT)
I've tried so many things like:

trying to burn with lower speeds
command line options,
Disabling DMA (hdc),
Creating links,
Googled,
e..........t............c............

Now 2 - 3 weeks & many many fags later, I'm still back in sq 1, non the wiser but more desperate than ever to get this damn thing working.... I've attached all the configs + results so you can see whether I've missed out on anything....

Let me tell you, each time when you want to burn a CD, rebooting the machine so you can switch to a lower kernel (I can still burn CDs if I'm using a lower kernel than 2.4.20...) is not my kind of thing.

If you guys need more info please fire away......

TIA
Cheers
Tony

You did make sure the kernel was compiled for CD-RW support didn't you?

Check your kernel upgrades. You might have missed something...........http://davidcoulson.net/writing/pcp/183/masterclass-linuxexpert.pdf

I recently upgraded my kernel to the 2.4.20 series & have had no luck burning cd's with them either, I also end up getting Insmod keybdev already installed errors. I have recompiled the kernel several times & these errors still pop up & freeze up my computer. I'm glad you posted this question because I just reinstalled an older kernel & was going to ask thi question myself  . Any ideas anyone?

Even I've recompiled the kernel several times & the same thing keeps happening.

I was advised by a mate of mine today to upgade to the latsest firmware (which I did 3 - 4 hrs ago) it's still the same (the damn machine keeps freezing up on me at the time of fixating the cd)

bones996, apart from recompiling the kernel what else have done???

what version of cdrtools are you running? did you recompile cdrtools after recompiling/installing your kernel?

does the output of cdrecord give any clues?

have you tried a different set of media?

is the burner old/new/shot?

upgrading your kernel should not cause any errors i have used cdrtools successfully after the last three stable releases.

I am using cdrtools 2.0-1 & have reinstalled them after upgrading my kernel, but my system still freezes while blanking a cd & I have to shut it down. Because of this I also have no error or output logs to check since I have to do a hard reboot. I also have the same problems when installing the new kernel from source rather than using redhats rpms.

Besides recompiling the kernel I have reinstalled cdrtools & checked the settings in Xcdroast (what I normally use) & still have the same problems. I don't think it's my cdrw drive because it works perfectly under the 2.4.18 series kernels & I always recompile the kernel after making sure that my flaky winmodem still works. This problem with cdrtools has bothered me since I first tried using the newer kernel - I'm going to try the 2.5 series & se if it works any better. I'll let you know how it goes.

>>what version of cdrtools are you running?
Cdrecord 2.00.3

>>did you recompile cdrtools after recompiling/installing your kernel?
Yes

>>does the output of cdrecord give any clues?
no.... the writing process completes without a hitch but at the time of fixating the cd the machine freezes

>>have you tried a different set of media?
Yes 3 different types of RWs & CDRs

True

You can say that again mate....

>> I'm going to try the 2.5 series & se if it works any better. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hmmmmm. I didn't think of that.... It'll be interesting to find out what happens with a development kernel

I'm having problems downloading the developemnet kernel & the 2.4.21 source code - I hope you bear with me or are willing to try on of these yourself & let me know the results. Sorry about the delay, I should have been able to post yesterday, but with redoing the kernel I lost my modem connection.:(

sorry for the delay in getting back to you I tried it on kernel 2.5.70 yesterday (recompiled it 3 times.... didn't work... Ohhh btw the new gui for xconfig in 2.5.70 is cool)

Thanks for the info. I had pretty much given up on trying to get the 2.5 series for the time being & am going to start downloading the 2.4.21 kernel before I go to work today (I'm using dialup & its painfully slow at times  ). I was also thinking that my install of cdrtools shouldn't have been a problem with the other kernel because a basically did & fresh install of my computer, upgraded the kernel, rebooted, & then reinstalled all of my rpms - I keep my updates on disk :)
