I used to post here back in high school, when this was called LinuxNewbie.org - To put that into perspective, I'm graduating from college next year, so that was a minimum of three years ago, and I know people were on here before I was.

So! Who here was on here when this used to be lno? What happened to the cool moderaters and stuff!

Let's make this a lno reunion thread - everyone here a long time ago post and let's see if we can remenise (sp?!).

wb.

Looks like I registered about the same time as you.

I think a lot of the old mods got really busy and had to resign as mods, but still hang out a bit (X_console, Strike, etc). Some are still here (mdwatts, although he's having a bit of a holiday), but some have gone never to return (Craig McPherson, Sensei).

I signed up when it was called linuxnewbie. I posted some back then I remember strike! Back then, there were more posts with people saying RTFM though. Mabye people have gotten smarter and we dont need to tell them about the manual? I doubt it I think it might just be that we have mellowed out.

those are some familiar names! I remember when McPherson and Sensei (well, Sensei first) got the axe, we were all so annoyed. I was surprised to find my login still working! Wow

Yeah; I loved the off topic discussions too. It looks as though you guys have gotten all on task and professional and stuff ;).

Man, my sig is even out of date. Who says HTML development anymore!

Hey, what does it mean that this thread has a black dot on the folder? Just wondering; isn't in the FAQ

Bah. I've been here longer than any of you!!

ToadMan8: A black dot on the thread icon means you've participated in the conversation :)

People were more curteous back then. They didnt always try to correct people's trivial mistakes just to "prove themselves" smarter than everyone else. And they definately didnt correct people as much when they didnt knwo what they were talking about much less what they are correcting was talking abou.

AlexPlank: It's not that people are less curteous - there's just a lot more people here now, so the signal to noise ratio isn't too good any more. Look at slashdot as a prime example :)

Once you group a lot of people together on the same subject, you'll find a few 14 year olds who really think they know everything, and try to tell those of us who've been around for a while that everything we say is wrong. That's probably why the only threads that I try to help people with are the ones where they've taken the time to properly describe their problem - they're probably more mature than anyone who puts down a three line query, and replies ten minutes later to find out why nobody has replied yet. The only ones like that I reply to are the ones where I *really* know the answer off the top of my head.

Ha ha - believe it or not I had started my haitus by then. I wonder if Sensei or McPherson's nic's are avalible... it'd be funny to bring one of them back to life ::evil grin:: Hey, the passwords are probably pretty simple if they are still users - computers were so slow back then cat42 was a brute force crack proof password ;)

Color me surprised when I followed a link to lno and found everything had changed. I wasn't a linux newbie when I first came here, but tried to help the folks that were. That was forever ago. A lot has changed!

And you want to check out how long, check out the registered date!

<------ Wow! Like I said, Forever ago.

I'm going to assume you've made more than 3 posts, it's just you lost most of your post count when they pruned back the DB a while back :) If they'd preserved the post counts, I'd be well over a thousand by now...

I agree! Sashdot is fscked up in the way you mentioned. I hope we dont get to that point. (the kid/opinioinated factor is getting worse, however)

i remember when it was lno, and i hung around for like a month before i posted, didnt want to intrude on what seemed like a very tight knit community. after reading some of the replies, i made sure i had looked everywhere for the ansewer, i felt like everyone would make me feel stupid for asking such an easy question. haha, either im just strange or things have changed.

edit: i can type well, evidentaly

We have been losing a lot of long-time people recently. In June of last year there was a change from Ultimate Bulletin Board to VBulletin and many people coudn't re-activate their old accounts. Then in February LinuxNewbie changed to JustLinux. By March most of the veterans and trolls left the board. I never really figured out where they all went.

"Pruned back the post counts..."--so that's where mine went. Well, you can't blame them..I was off for a while when they changed from LNO to JLO

They left because the board no longer felt like their community. I didn't like the shift to vBulletin (I still disagree with the ad banner on the right hand side of pages - I find it quite irritating to be taking up so much screen space), and I definately preferred the name linuxnewbie, especially with it being a .org rather than a .com. After the shift in policy on the /dev/random forum, I left for months.

[EDIT: I also didn't like the shift to vBulletin because it didn't show my (relatively low) member number. Hence why I display it beneath my name.]

I only came back so I could help out people with their problems, grumble occaisionally, and just generally distract myself from studying.

You better watch out because this thread will get locked since it doesn't have anything to do with computers or linux. Some moderators would rather continue the name calling SCO vs Linux threads rather than let people find out where they are from or have been. There goes the sense of community.

Personally, I don't find the changes all that bad, of course I have not been here as long as many, but still.

There are very few forums like this for the Linux Newbie, and the ones that are around that I have seen either lack information, or are just populated by very rude people, so no one really uses them.

the ads on this site do not effect me ( or probably anyone for that matter) I have ignored them as I am sure most of you have.

I do agree however, that this no longer feels like a community, but more like quick stop for information. I do miss some of the Older Mods, but as with anything, that too will pass.

JL has helped a lot of people by being here, i would hate to see that change.

as to the /dev/random I can say that I don't blame them for chaging it to Linux/Computer related, I mean come on, read some of the postes for the past year (if they are still around) it was getting nuts, and really had no benifit for the Linux users which is what this site is about after all.

I say, that as Linux users we are acustom to changes, this is just one of them. Adapt, and go with the flow.

:)

(Is Ben a Member? Hee, hee). linux junior. and MrBen is here, if thats who you are referring to.

I think Ben refers to tminos, or TiredManInNeedOfSleep for those who go way back. Then again, maybe not. I wonder where 11000 is now? And I suppose the LNOTSWKC (LNO Trivial Star Wars Knowledge Community, or whatever is was called) is gone now.

Yeah, the pruning really sucked. I should have over 2000 posts now, and some others were hit much worse than I when it happened.

So did they ban Craig? Is that why he's not on? I wasn't around when it happened. I guess that means we can talk about him:) Hey Craig, if you're watching:

I can remember Craig getting bent out of shape for mentioning his name, unless it was to do with debian or stone girls.

I remember signing up when it was known as LNO, Slackware  was cool, and we had an actual off-topic forum ;)

I was absent for quite some time though, so I'm not sure if I would consider myself an old timer.

I read through this thread, and I recognise many of the names, although I'd be suprised if anyone recognises me. I was never much of a post-whore, and so my posts usually had something to do with the topic at hand.

I signed up after Sensei got the boot, but before the switch to vBulletin, and before LNO became JLC.

If anyone remembers me, good for you. After /dev/random stopped being a forum where (just about) anything went, I pretty much stopped posting altogether.

Actually, I think he was referring to Ben Affleck, because he says LNO had become JLO (J-Lo, Jennifer Lopez, geddit) although actually it is JLC, not JLO

Guess I can post a bit here. I remember some of you guys, and I miss the old LNO. Anybody remember the cgi based forum they used before they switched to vBulletin? UBB was it?
