Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Is REDHAT up2date proprietary or is the source available? AlexPlank 06-04-2003, 06:13 PM I would like to know. If it is i dont really like the idea. Hayl 06-04-2003, 06:22 PM i believe the source is available for all their software. (up2date is still evil tho. it leaves a daemon running on your system all the time. just 1 of another 10000000 daemons that are running on a default red hat install) :) AlexPlank 06-04-2003, 06:33 PM How do i remove daemons? Hayl 06-04-2003, 06:35 PM on a red hat system its under the hat menu under servers i think. on a good linux system, you don't need to because the installer puts only what you need :) Icarus 06-04-2003, 07:12 PM For the up2date source, you can find the source RPM here (ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/9/en/os/i386/SRPMS) (for RH9) The GUI tool in RH9 is in the menu (the redhat ;)) System Settings -> Server Settings -> Services AlexPlank 06-04-2003, 07:25 PM Why aren't there non redhat mirrors for up2date>??????? Kai99 06-04-2003, 11:39 PM I think the whole point of .rpm is to get you to pay for the updates. I am convinced that RH want dependency problems in their package mgmt. system to frustrate people into buying an up2date subscription. If you have several machines it might be worth the cost but not for me. Kai Kaligraphic 06-05-2003, 07:52 PM It is actually meant to send people to Debian and Gentoo. I use Debian, and apt-get blows rpms out of the water. And, IIRC, RH still doesn't include apt-rpm. Apt-get revolutionized the way package managment systems will run from this point forward. Anybody who has actually used apt-get would never say that it blows. I think you blow...j/k :D AlexPlank 06-06-2003, 08:04 AM Originally posted by bosox79 apt is a good tool I use an apt port from fedora http://www.fedora.us/wiki/FedoraHOWTO to get back ported packages and keep my system up2date:D I was just kidding. I love apt-get. I use the fedora packages and apt-get also. bosox79 06-06-2003, 06:52 PM Originally posted by AlexPlank I was just kidding. I love apt-get.
