I am running mandrake 8.0 on my computer and i am still new at it. ^_^ MB[DK] 06-04-2003, 02:39 PM Hello. JamminJoeyB 06-04-2003, 02:45 PM Words of advice. 1. Search first, ask second. 2. Spend 15 minutes a day here reading the new posts on the main page. Some one will probably give you a new idea for something to add, tweak or do with your system. 3. If you want to send people off on a flame war, rant etc. Ask something like favorite wm/desktop, anything to do with NVidia drivers, favorite distro. These topic are covered about 100 times on this board. sharth 06-04-2003, 02:53 PM uhmm.. hi :) i like blackbox. and debian. and you should learn what urpmi is. silentangelic 06-04-2003, 02:58 PM right now i am looking for opengl nvidia for my mandrake 8.0 linux box. XD so i kinda found something on opengl.org and have to get mini-cd to burn it on my cd. because... my linux box is on my second computer. heh. also i have many to do like set up router and configure the dsl thing. XD heh i have many thing to learn! ahhh..... heh AlexPlank 06-04-2003, 04:53 PM THATS AWESOME. WAY TO GO. :D How do you like it? Strogian 06-04-2003, 05:28 PM Yay! hop-frog 06-04-2003, 06:12 PM Unless you have an older computer you should consider upgrading Mandrake to their latest. 8.0 is a few years old. Old distros are more difficult to use because you will have more dependancy troubles installing new programs. Raoul_Duke 06-05-2003, 05:49 AM Welcome to linux :) Resistance is futile :p linuxmad 06-05-2003, 06:37 AM Welcome;) ... and remember...we are proud to be Linux users... we use it because we love it, not because we are forced to use it... Anomaly 06-05-2003, 06:54 AM Welcome.. I also started with Mandrake a few months back... Time for a tip... Learn what URPMI is.. It will make your life a lot easier. Search for urpmi on "how I did it" section of these forums... Also if you are using older verson for some specific reason (Older machines) As said.. you will probably want to use a newer version instead... Its lot easier and supports more hardware etc... Linux is AWESOME!!! Once you figure it out :p mrBen 06-05-2003, 07:24 AM Originally posted by linuxmad Welcome;) ... and remember...we are proud to be Linux users... we use it because we love it, not because we are forced to use it... Well said that man. Some people dont like that !! ;) Cheerz, deanrantala 06-05-2003, 12:10 PM Yes! Mandrake 9.1 Too cool! And (repeat after me) u.s.e.r. f.r.e.i.n.d.l.y Strogian 06-05-2003, 02:45 PM Yay! diving_penguin 06-05-2003, 06:10 PM Hey :) I'm quite a bit of a newbie, myself - a few months old ;) My advice: Read, read, read, and then mess around on your system as much as you can(just not as root, if you want to be careful ;)) Have fun! eyceguy 06-05-2003, 06:37 PM My only tip for you is to not be afraid to mess sumthing up. As everyone else, we learn from our mistakes, I know I messed up a bunch of times and had to re-install linux a gazillion times. But I dont regret it and I came away knowing that much more. That and I became an expert at installing linux :D . canon006 06-05-2003, 06:48 PM well said, don't be afraid to hose your system, i can't even fathom how many times i've installed linux, and don't be afraid to try new distros once you're a little confortable with the command line; i started with mandrake 8.0 and have since tried about 6 other distros and now i'm back to mandrake with version 9.1. having 2 pcs helps so when one gets toasted, you can still look up fixes, help, etc. linux can be a rough ride but it's definitely a rewarding one. silentangelic 06-05-2003, 06:55 PM I apprectices it alot... is the word 'apprectice' correct or no? bah... anyway.. I learned that mandrake 9.1 is already released, i guess i am year behind on that, heh. I just brought 8.0 at half/price store which is far cheap. i seem fine with linux and learning.. right now i am poking around with konsole, emacs, vim, etc... ah yes... i did made helloworld program in C... many many thing to learn... heh. however i am still not fimilar with filesystem yet(for instance: /dev, /usr, and et etcera..) Smile! linux rule. oh yeah.. i did ate red pill before i enter the linux world! (kidding! Not real pill but i eat the hot tamato candy if you know what it is. heh) Linux Newbie, Richard P.S. forgive my own small lackin grammar skill. myshkin 06-05-2003, 07:08 PM hmm people are still linking jl as www.linuxnewbie.org? j/k :p im a newbie too, and heres my word of wisdom, if nothing seems to work at first, stop, and try again the next day. justlinux.com
