Just wondering...
Has any other older JLer on here noticed that the level of distro zealotry has almost become non existant? I mean, I don't want to start a flame war or any other type of holy war over Distros, but I kind of miss the cute bantering on about everyone's flavor-of-the-month distro.
Or have all of the people who did that stuff left? Or maybe I missed it, but is this now frowned upon?
But, not to cause a holy war, but instead for old time's sake:
 Slackware
Funny thing is, I don't even run Slackware, or any other Linux for that matter. I'm almost exclusively in FreeBSD these days!

Free BSD sucks! Must stand for Bullshirt Software Dufass or something - SuSE Linux rocks! Everyone should use SuSE.... er...unless you want things to compile easily
and dude.... CMonster stands for Cookie Monster ... really!

Debian is stupid.
I will personally beat up anyone not using Red Hat 9.
I realize this is going to take some time, so please be patient.

Are you kidding... Debian Rocks my Socks!
I need to install something? I open up the Kpackage, search for the package, click on the install, and voila... Its even added to the menu!
Easier then Mandrake I have to say ;)
Infact, debian installed via Knoppix (knx-hdinstall) makes a perfect easy to use distro :p
Not to mention the one button click (On kpackage) to upgrade the whole system
Once I get ALSA setup and ready to rock... I'll dump my current Mandrake partition

SuSE or Redhat Forever! altho i've only used Mandrake when it was in version 8, i still didn't like it, so peh! yast2 is a magnificent installer, one of the easiet yet complex distros available, 7 cds for SuSE 8.1, now THAT'S beauty

You are treading on dangerous territory, my friend. God will roast your stomach in Hell for such blasphemy. Either you start using Linux again, or you will be committing suicide beneath the walls of the city of Debian! I will welcome you with bullets and shoes!

MANDRAKE.
serious question: y do so lil ppl use MDK (or so it seems)? From what i've seen so far, it's excellent. Although i havnt tried anything else bsides a failed Redhat and Gentoo installation.

Debian all the way! :D
mchangun:
I found that when I tried Mandrake (admittedly a while ago now) their cool GUI config utilities would b0rk horribly if you went and edited the config files manually behind its back. Perhaps this has changed, but if not, it's completely useless to me.
In addition, MandrakeSoft begged for money on a couple of occasions, and for a while it looked like they might be going under entirely. The company was run by idiots who had sunk all the money into failed e-learning ventures. That said, the old management has been chucked and they're churning out new releases again. I imagine the fiscal uncertainty might have cost them some userbase, though.
Plus, some people think that they've lost their focus on creating an uber desktop (what with Mandrake Network Firewall, et al), and some reviews said that as a result, RedHat has now caught up and so there's no longer any need for Mandrake. I think this is an exaggeration, but who knows. :)
That said, I think their userbase is still pretty darn big.

Well i'm sorry to spoil the party but i think everyone should be brainwashed to think Slack.
Worlds problems sorted, end of disease, end of poverty and a fast responsive distro.

i started with slack...left to explore...tried about 20 different distros...came back and slack still loved me....the time has come for me to go public with this:
Slackware you have always been there when i needed you
you loved me from the start and understood when i felt i needed to 'play the field' with other distros and when i came back you accepted me back with no questions....
Slackware....I love you....will you marry me?

SCO UNIX FOREVER! --oh wait! is it genTOO late to change my mind --okay, all distros suck only LFS is anygood
OS-X forever! --er wait... that's BSD isn't it.......
I installed Slackware back when it was 4x something and somehow couldn't understand the humor or fascination of a bunch of smarta$$ proverb messages like:
"A search without a clue leaves the seeker clueless -there were no matches for your query."
"Perhaps you should try a command that exists."

I have been through mandrake 8.2-9-and 9.1 and i like it a lot
but then i tryed suse 8.1 and now suse 8.2 which is perfect for me only a few months into linux. I tryed redhat 9 and hated it, its ugly, poor multimedia support and i found no tool like yast.
So its suse for me. now i have Knoppix life iso and was wondering if i should install it on hd and try out debian that way?
NEWbiees opinion.

That's more like it. This has been about the weakest distro war I've ever seen. Which is all I'd expect from you sweater-wearing field mice debutantes that run Red Hat. If you aren't running Debian or Slack, you might as well go running back to Redmond with your tail between your legs. We all know Szulik is just a no-talent Bill Gates wannabe. Ha HA!

Are you saying that red hat users have tails? Harsh words from an annoying cartoon kid.
Besides we will go running to Redmond, all we need to do is sell a few more Advanced Servers and then we own Microsoft. Muhahaahaahah, all the while your puny distros are helpless after we assassinate Torvalds and run the Unix/Linux world with our true friends SCO.
Besides did you really expect something from the debian hippies? Yeah why don't you apt-get your asses out of here?

I WILL PERSONALLY ANNIHALATE ANYONE USING ANYTHING OTHER THAN REDHAT, DEBIAN, SLACKWARE, OR GENTOO.
OF COURSE IF YOU USE A MAC I REALLY DONT CARE WHAT YOU DO. I HAVE AN IBOOK AND DONT REALLY KNOW WHICH ONE TO USE. (THIS DOESNT MEAN THAT I WANT PEOPLE TO TELL ME OR RECCOMEND ANY PPC DISTROS)
