Whats your desktop enviroment (or window manager) of choice? Gnome, KDE, ICEwm? Explain why.

why do we have yet another one of these threads? there must be at least 100 of these floating around already. and most have turned into flame wars and then either died a quiet death or been closed (thankfully) by the mods.

I knew how many WMs ad DEs there are. On the poll I just listed some of the more popular ones. The average linux user doesn't use "PekWM" or CTWM". Thats why I have 5 choices and an "other" box.

xfce4 is good. imagine if gnome dropped 50 pounds. anyway, in all fairness, i change regularly for different reasons. i find that usually i end up using one of the *box varients the most.

You should have at least added a "Blackbox or derivitave" option...

And Fluxbox is my WM of choice. I love the tabs, it's light, it's powerful, and it doesn't clutter anything up like ICE or any of the DE's. Who needs icons on a desktop when you've got that beautiful *box menu? All running under Slackware 8.1, with a few little dockaps for mixer/xmms functionality... it's all you'd ever want in a WM.

"Real" linux users only use the terminal. Or at least that's what I was told once. :D

They just keep reliving the year 1983, using the terminal every day, never even noticing that their proprietary UNIX workstations have been replaced PCs running Linux, that usenet is now dominated by people seeking illegal pornography, that Michael Jackson is now white, or that a half-way decent GUI is much easier to use and learn than the command line ever was. It's really quite sad.

Moving back on topic, I'll just stick in a plug for my personal favorite desktop environment: ROX (http://rox.sf.net). It's a light-weight, easy to use desktop environment/file manager based on a strong drag-and-drop paradigm. It has lots of nifty features and just released a new stable version.

I really like ROX too. I know that many people here on JustLinux have briefly tried it out without actually taking a look at its full set of features. You can do a lot more with Drag and Drop than just dragging applications from one folder to the other. If only more developers would take note of it and impliment compatibiltiy.
