KDE and Gnome are not Window Mangers, they are Desktop Environments. Gnome uses the Metacity Window Manager by default, and KDE uses the KWM Window Manager.
If you wish, you can set up KDE or Gnome to use any Window Manager you want, if you don't like the defaults.

xfce is also a desktop manager.
Hayl: KDE's default window manager is kwin, not kwm.
other WM's: twm, vtwm, ctvm, openbox, waimea, fvwm, sawfish, metacity, windowmaker, 3dwm. there are others afaik. search for them on freshmeat.net (huge database of GNU/Linux applications)
I knew that i read (actually i didnt read it) a huge list somewhere:
here it goes:

My favorite one is ion but I like windowlab quite a lot too.
The first splits your screen in parts so that you can maximize use of screen without overlap. Very customizable (lua scripting). You should customize keybindings (switch desktop, switch frame, go to right, up, ...)
Windowlab has an interesting menu system (right click on the task bar and launch options are shown horizontally). It also has a different switching model. Most important to me is the way it forbid windows to get out of the desktop, except to the bottom (but not beyond titlebar).
Both are on freshmeat of course; you should try them because explaining them is almost impossible.
Cheers,

WOOOOOOOO!!!
Finally someone who has even heard of ion before!!!
I used to use it nearly exclusively. As soon as I installed a new distro/*NIX, that was the first piece of software I'd install. If it was available precompiled, I'd install it. If there wasn't a precompiled version available for that system, I'd try my darn'dest to compile one for it! I only recently switched to Gnome, though-- it came that my wife was using my logged-in user fairly frequently, and as you already know, I'm sure, ion can be baffling for someone who doesn't know how to use it!
 ion

So can i configure KDE to run fluxbox as the WM??
Btw, what IS the difference between a Desktop Environment and WM?

Yes you can. You need to edit a configuration file to do this, but I can't remember which one.
See http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37946 for alternate ways to use another WM. If you search for this in the 'Window/Desktop Managers' forum, I'm sure you'll find it. Search for a topic containing 'kde' and 'wm' posted by me. It several years old I think though, so it might be gone already.

A wm simply places windows from apps where they belong on the desktop, and have some small extra stuff like a taskbar & a menu. A DE however also contains all sort of apps & utilities which are written using the same graphical toolkit (GTK+ or GTKmm for Gnome, QT for KDE). All though apps look the same and comply to some standards defined by the DE. I think that's the main difference.

heh yeah good guess then ;)
just looked it up - apparently there used to be a 'kwm', which is now replaced by 'kwin'.
