I was having trouble authenticating to my ISP due to parity errors. Having lost a great deal of knowledge in init strings (back in DOS and BBS days), the error came up saying that the serial link wasn't 8 bit clean, all had 7 set to 0. Finally, after a number of posts and a great deal of research, somone told me it was parity. So, I played around with all my settings and located HOWTO's on serial ports, modems, and ppp. So, I went into minicom and saw a few things. One: it easily configured my init string via my modem on the first try. Poking around, I noticed it was set to 8N1 automatically. So, I copied the init string from the screen and pasted it to /etc/wvdial.conf. As seen below:
[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyS4
Baud = 115200
SetVolume = 3
Dial Command = ATDT
Init1 = AT S7=45 S0=0 L1 V1 X4 &c1 E1 Q0
FlowControl = CRTSCTS
[Dialer Defaults]
Username = ****
Password = ****
Phone = 555-5555
Stupid Mode = 1
Inherits = Modem0
To get the same results from KPPP, just go into the modem tab and paste the init string in the proper place and you're set. The only problem I still have is KPPP locking my screen icons while loaded. Everything will free up after KPPP exits, but while loaded, they're frozen. I hope this helps people in the future.
