This is a very simple question, but how do I change an icon in Mandrake 9.1, KDE. I have firebird, and not a nice icon at all.

Right click on the firebird icon then scroll down to the properties menu, then when you are in the properties menu make sure the general tab is highlighted then click on the icon in the new window. after you click on the you will then need to navigate to the directory that has the new icon you want to use. then double click then new icon. after you do this the icon should appear as the new firebird icon in the general tab section. if thats the case close your dialouge sp box & you should be set BTW you may also need to restart x-windows for the change to take effect. hope that helps:cool:

Is there any way it can just be switched to a default KDE icon? I don't have a specific icon in mind, i just dislike the "shell command" icon.

yes, you will just need to navigate to the default directory where the default icons are stored & then select it from there. I think the directory is usr/share/kde/ you will have to forgive me it has been awhile sense I have run mandrake:) I think when you click on the firebird icon in the properties menu it will take you to the directory where the icons for your current icon theme are stored

I can't seem to get it to go. When i go into the properties, do i click on the icon in the properties box, the general tab, or am i just totally off right now?

The general tab should be selected by default . what you should do is click on the icon that is just to the left of the text box. when you do that a new window should pop up asking you to select an icon from the ones listed in the window. also in this window you will see some menus that say things like devices & then below that browse. this will most likely be grayed out. if you click on the devices menu you will want to scroll down until you see a listing for applications. then this will list all of the application icons for your current icon set:) to the left of the applications listing you will see a section called icon source system should be selected by default:D

Alright i figured out what you mean, but it won't let me do it for this icon. It's annoying. Are there any other ways?

you are unable to click on the icon to change it? do you get an error saying you don't have access privliges sp? to the icon or something to the effect? or is there no box that you can click on in the general tab?

There's no box I can hit.

What does it say in the text box next to the icon in the general tab? where is the icon located that you are trying to change, ie in your kmenu or as a link/shortcut on your desktop?

It says Mozilla Firebird. The icon i found that i want is in the directory for Firebird, which for me is /home/doug/Documents/Installs/Mozilla Firebird/Icons

One other thing- I don't know if this effects this, but it seems to be a shell command file, will that have an impact on it?

I suggest that in order to get a good, clean answer to your question, we lay a little more groundwork first. You want to change an icon of something, but you never actually specified where this icon you want to change is. Is the icon that you want to change on the KDE menu? Is it on the panel? Is it on the desktop? Or is it a file (as in, not a program)... when you click on the icon, does it open a specific file, or just load a program? Once we know this, we can give you more specific directions tailored toward what you want to do.

Good point. It's a desktop icon, for Mozilla Firebird, so therefor it would just run an application. Sorry about that, I should work on being more specific

Don't worry about it... specificity is generally a learned habit. Now, some of what I'm going to say has probably already been said, but I'm going to say it again for the sake of continuity and clarity.

If you want to change the icon on your desktop, first right-click on it, then choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu. This should bring up a dialog box. I've attached an image as a representation of this. As you can see, there's a text box that contains the name of the desktop link you're working with, in this case Circus Linux.desktop. Directly to the left of that is the icon for the link itself. If you click on that icon, it will bring up another dialog that will allow you to choose from your standard set of icons, or to browse your disk to use one that isn't in your standard set. Once you've found the icon you want to use, click on it, and you will be returned to the previous dialog, with the new icon replacing the old. Then all you have to do is simply click "OK" and you're ready to go.

That's all there is to it, really. I hope this has been of some help.

Well there lies the problem- i'm not allowed to click on the icon to change it. It won't let me for some reason..... i dunno if it's because it's a shell script or what, but I can't change i that way

I thought you had already installed firebird, there is no way to change a shell script icon, what you could do is install firebird it's self & then you should be able to change the icon for the link you create. for help with installing firebord checkout http://sxs.iqchoice.com/index2.html

or you could do what I did I changed the path of my mozilla 1.4 icon to point to the firebird shell script & now when I click the icon formozilla firebird launches. I then changed the mozilla 1.4 icon to the firebird one

I hope that helps. BTW the link I use to launch firebird is a link in my kpanel

It would be helpful if you created two posts, one with an attached screen-shot of the icon on your desktop that you want to change, and the other of the "Properties" dialog box like the one I posted. That would help to clarify some things, or at least give some visual clues.
