I'm trying to get my system to dual boot, but whenever i install RH8 into the HDD, it loads up GRUB ok, I can get onto linux fine, but when I try to get on windows xp again, it gives a blue screen error involving autochk, and then shuts down. I have tried 3 times, and i'm 99.9% sure my partitions are OK, so what could be the problem?

You have probably hosed the NTloader by installing Grub to the MBR.

nah, I made sure to leave the MBR alone and install GRUB to /dev/hda2 (my linux partition's boot sector)

Use the XP install cd and run "Recovery Console"

got both OS's to boot ok now, just have to use a boot disk to get linux to run, or else it just automatically loads windows. doesn't really bother me, actually kind of convenient since all the others in my fam that use my laptop on occassion have no interest in learning linux

Yea, Lilo's sweet and i dont see why you cant use it in the MBR. Even if your family has no interest in Linux you can configure Lilo to boot XP as the default OS.
That way you dont have to use annoying floppies.
By the way Grub has always behaved well with me

Because they end up screwing the NT loader and the XP becomes unbootable until you repair the MBR. Believe me it's easier to use the NT loader to boot Linux, if your dual booting, and you don't need floppies to boot. Remeber to transfer a new "bootsect.lnx" to C:\ after every new lilo config and run of /sbin/lilo.
