Hi, i just tried to instal mandrake 9.1 today and of course i got a problem right off the bat.

I hit enter to install linux it starts detecting all my devices, it gets to detecting usb devices and it stops. The error i get is "Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk" Could be a hardware failure or a linux kernel failure.

So i umpluged my crap burner, and mouse and speakers, everything i could and still install. And it still gave me the same msg.

Any ideas how to get past this?

Do you have the option to disable USB in BIOS?
At least turn off/disable PnP OS in BIOS.

Cheers :)

I get the same errors. I disabled everything I could, I even tried different CD roms... Maybe some of the ISOs are flawed.

Did you guys check the md5 checksums before burning the iso image?

Sounds like a bad CD or problem reading file. Make Sure it's clean. I ran into a problem installing once and it was a piece of dust on the CD. Cleaned it off and off it went. Had to start over of course.

Just a suggestion.

I tried to use my old Limunx Mandrake 8.2 installation CD to see if my CD-ROM was thr problem. The installation loaded fine. Yes, the MD5 checksum for all three ISOs matched. I tried three different Linux Mandrake 9.1 installation CDs, and all compain about ramdisk after the USB check. I disabled USB in my BIOS and removed all USB devices. (I doubt it has anything to do with USB anyway). I installed Linux Mandrake 9.1 fine no more than a month ago. I haven't added any new hardware or changed any system settings in the BIOS. The only thing different are the CDs I am using. I am using the latest Nero to burn the ISOs, and it finishes without errors. This is really pissing me off.

At the first install/boot prompt, enter

nousb

and see if that works.

Some Redhat boot and install options that should also work with Mandrake.
