I am sure you are all sick of threads about whether or not someone should use Linux or not, but please humour me for just a few minutes.

On Thursday, I'll be getting a new computer. First new one I've had in a long time; this one is a P200 and I've been using it for four years since getting it used.

It will have no preloaded OS on it, so I am trying to decide what OS to use. I've got discs for Win98 and 2K as well as some Linux ones I've downloaded in the past from runs I've made at running it (my computer was so dreadfully slow I grew frustrated without giving it a fighting chance).

I would like to run Linux. I am not sure why exactly, and I am worried it is mainly for aesthetics(!). I like the way it looks. Of course, it is always nice that it has so many other pros going with it.

But, I think there are still some programs I will need Windows for-- mainly games. Specifically, I want to be able to play some EA sports games (NBA 2001 and Madden Football), Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate, which I already have and Neverwinter Nights and GTA3 which I intend to purchase.

Now, games are not the PRIMARY function of my machine. I am a student heading to grad school in September, so I do use my machine a lot for word processing. I also use it for music and have got an old Haupague WinTV card that I'm going to run.

The real question is, is Linux worth it for me? Is it worth the learning curve for what I want to do? I've used it before and have a BASIC knowledge of how to do some things, but I'd hardly call myself a really capable user. Yet.

I was weighing my options. I've been using Win2K as my primary OS for about a year now, and it seems to be the best Windows version that I have access to right now. But, I can't play some of my games on it. So even if I went with it, I would still need 98 as a games platform. So no matter how I slice it, I am looking at two OSes.

I am rambling and all that, but any discussion/advice/thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes why not? It will worth for almost everything except games.. but if you also have a windows installed what's the problem?

Win 98/XP and Linux Mandrake would be a nice choice.

Luck! :D

I haven't had any use for Win98 for some time now but, I do keep W2k installed. :) I have that and Redhat installed in a dual boot setup like so......

W2k loaded on Drive 1 and partition 1
Fat partition on Drive 2 and partition 1 ( for file transfers )
Redhat loaded on Drive 2 and partition 2

I also use Norton Ghost 2003 to back up my W2K ( NTFS ) and Linux systems. That way a complete restore only takes about ten minutes.

I only use Win98 on mine at home for a couple games and the rest of the drive for storage :)

Drive 1 30GB Win98
Drive 2 60GB Red Hat 9
Drive 3 20GB Gentoo

I would add more drives, but I've run out of room in the case

I still have 3 IDE channels available and need to mod the case some so I can add them

Scary part is, I have 2 15GB, 10GB and a couple 8GB laying around :)

I do have another PC that's in pieces that I want to get put back together and do some web server testing with :)

Not to mention my wife's computer running WinME (use to be 2000 but some things didn't work and the system died somehow) has a 15GB drive...she gets mad everytime I get a larger drive :)

I've had Gentoo installed for 2 weeks and I over filled it the other day...I guess UT2003, RtCW, UT, Half-life/counter-strike, Fallout, Fallout Tactics and America's Army takes up more disk space then I though :D

I've got a nice tortured mess of OS's on my two drives. :) /hda is a 20 gig with mandrake 7something and redhat 8 @10gig each, /hdb has debian (my primary one for the last year or so), suse 8.1, a halfbuilt gentoo, and freebsd 5@30gig, 15, 15, and 20, respectively. The tortured mess is the partition setup of my logical partitions on the second drive (you can only have four primary, and I've installed a number of systems on that second drive before my current setup, so my partition setup looks like an undefragged windows box. :D

Linux is going mainstream, so if you have the time, you will be ahead of the curve if you learn it now. Even with $40B to blow giving windows away to every govt in the world, the stage is set for Linux mainstream. Being a student, Linux/Unix is always good on your resume. With that, install Windows first so you can play the games, then install Linux so you can dual boot (Linux install takes care of this automagically if Windows already exists). More and more games are being ported to Linux, and you can follow my sig for thousands of 'equivalents', although, they are Linux, so they are usually superior. The above being said,

If you are wanting to use Linux to get a better version of Windows, you will be disappointed. If you want a better OS, then Linux is the way to go. There will be a learning curve, however, once you are there, I doubt you will ever go back to Windows. Too unintuive and messy. Also, at ~$40 a pop with 99% of all software you will ever need, MS can't compete.
