HELP HELP HELP

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET SLACKWARE TO INSTALL DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO CRY FOR HHHHEEEEELLLLPPP!!!!

But seriously. I wouldn't recommend trying to install Slackware via floppies. It would take FOREVER. If possible, I would try pulling the CD-ROM out of another machine and using it temporarily to install from. Or, if you have one, a parallel port CD-ROM. You could boot from a floppy, and then install that way.

Also, I don't mean to be so rude, but would you mind not using HELP and ALL CAPS? I, for one, read quite a few posts, and seeing that gets kind of annoying.

download from here (ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/Linux/slackware/slackware-9.0/bootdisks/) bare.i and README.TXT and from here (ftp://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/Linux/slackware/slackware-9.0/rootdisks/) install1 install2 and READMRE.TXT. Put them into your home directory for examle.
Get three empty foppy disks. Insert the first.
$ cd (to you home directory)
# su
# dd if=./bare.i of=/dev/fd0
after a minute remove the floppy , mark it as a "Bootdisk". insetr the second floppy
# mount /dev/fd0
# cat ./install1 > /dev/fd0
# umount /dev/fd0
remove the floppy, insert the third floppy
# mount /dev/fd0
#cat ./install2 > /dev/fd0
# umount /dev/fd0
So now you have "Install 1", "Install2" and "Bootdisk"
-----------------------------------------------------
You can use the RAWRITE instead if you are using Windows. Read the documentation on that FTP site.
------------------------------------------------------
Insert the "Bootdisk" floppy, it will boot a linux kernel, at the boot: prompt just hit <Enter>, it will ask you for a root/install disk, switch the floppy to "Install 1", after that switch it to "Install 2".
login: root
root@darkstar:~# cfdisk
root@darkstar:~# setup
Insert the Slackware CD-ROM now.

What he was reffering to was your use of caps.......It's the equivalent of shouting and considered impolite on the internet. When you know the inference it does have a tendency to irritate. Now you know the difference.;)

heh, I've never been called hardcore before. :) I'll take that as a compliment... I didn't even think I was up to the level of Jell-O core!

Seriously, I was primarily trying to get the point across about the CAPS and the use of HELP in your topic. Both of those items are unneccesary, and I just happen to find them especially annoying for some reason. I don't take things out on anyone-- notice I did provide some suggestions as to your current situation? I don't just go around posting willy-nilly-- I only post if I can add something useful to the thread.

And again, it would probably end up being a waste of time trying to install Slackware via floppies. The time you spend making the floppies, swapping them back and forth to the 486, and remaking the inevitable bad ones could be more fruitfully spent by browsing ebay for a parallel port CD-ROM drive, buying one for probably $20 US with shipping, and waiting for it to arrive. I'm not exagerating, either-- a floppy install could take that long. Heck, just booting from a floppy seems to take that long, but I don't know of any other way to get the install started on a 486.

On a much lighter note, if you can pull the drive and put it in a machine with a CD-ROM, you can install it there and the perform a transplant (similar to performing a CD-ROM transplant).

I would probably be quicker to do a NFS install on a 56k than installing by floppy. ;) This thread is a help though. I'll try the install again. BTW, the 8.1 and 9.0 free ISOs don't boot anymore. You have to boot using the boot disk and install.1 and install.2 now.

I went to the ftp sites listed butcan't find the directories listed for the boot & root disks... (I did look around for a while, but I could have been braindead :D)

I followed the instructions to use Rawrite to create bootdisks but none would work on my Windows computers, the bare.i seems to be in a folder, it gives me a permission is denied message, and if I use Rawrite on the individual peices I get a message saying that ...System.map does not exist.
Anyone know how I can get around this, I've been going through all the readme's I found and through most of the Slackware site looking for answers.

Thanks in advance :)
