Have wasted more time trying to install this thing than I do downloading patches and fixes for MS products, so it ain't looking good for the Penquins!

Downloaded the iso's for rh9 no problem, tried to do a hd install and it (rh installer) kept telling me that the hd doesn't contain a rh image file! Totally untrue. So, after a week of trying to convince it that it did, in every form possible, i gave up.
Score: Penquin-1; My Sanity-0
After a week break and scouring the internet for new curse words to use for the impending re-attempt at a Linux install, I attacked the little SOB with printed rh documentation in hand and three freshly burned CD's.

Linux once again boots up fine, finds all my hardware no problem, 6 GB WD drive as hda, 10 GB Fujitsu as hdb, and a 6GB IBM as hdc. Finds the floppy and CD no problem and starts the installer!
Good, good, CD install, all network cards are recognized, unknown monitor-no big deal, let's move on, ok, hd partitions and formatting............ Here is where my world turns to crap. It (rh installer) keeps telling me that it could not format the drive for some crazy reason, and not just that drive, any of the three drive I listed previously! I've tried swapping them around, I've tried formatting them with PM7, fdisking them, leaving them un partitioned and unformatted, formatted and partitioned. I've tried letting it (rh installer) dot it automatically, I tried doing it manually using Druid. Still, I get the same error, saying there was an error with hda, and it could not be formatted, this is a crucial error and blah, blah, blah, blah - reboot!

Any suggestions from anyone on what I could do with this old PII 450 w/ 384MB RAM and three HD's and four 10/100 NIC cards, since it doesn't seem to want to be a Router/Testbed running under Linux anyway?! Destined to be another Win Box I guess, since it doesn't seem to have a problem running Win2k.

Is this sounding like a common problem or have I just been a member of the 'Darkside' for too long? Or is RedHat really trying to get me to 'buy' their distribution and pushing rubbish out as their free distro?????????

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcomed before I go FAT32 on this boxes butt!!!!

Other than this, it's been a pretty good year so far!

I bought the RH9 boxed set and had no problem whatsoever doing the install.

On another occasion I downloaded Vector Linux 3.2 and had similar problems with the install that you are having with the RH9 iso's. I ordered the VL-3.2 cd and had not one problem installing.

I've got the boxed set RH9 cd's, so if you'd like PM me and I'll send you a copy of the set.

There's no use in you buying them when I'm more than willing to help you out.

It's up to you, so let me know, ok?

Peace, Yin :)

You burned the cds and double checked the checksums right?

Beyond that what I ended up doing after much effort was to start really fresh by doing a low level format on my hd just to be sure that any information is completely wiped including mbr. You may also want to remove any non necessary hardware like maybe the 3 extra nic cards! I know that even windows may balk at trying to install all that hardware on initial loading. Just a thought but if you really want to troubleshoot you should start with bare minimum.

Me too i hve dnld the distro from RH. Well , in the first day of availability I have cursing and cursing rH for not making it public everywhere and moreover , if you clicked their link to dnld they direct you to a page where you should pay 60 bucks to dnld. So i say to myself , f*** off RH , i will not pay. I paid once for 7.2 , the eincluded manuals didn't worth that much.
so , I did the same , partitioning and so on , only that , at formtting stuff there waas no option to choose a size and so on , same problems with cannot format. I said geez , that's changed a lot. So , I installed RH8 and the upgraded to RH9 , worked really good. This happenede on my laptop , a dell , where I have an iBM harddisk. On my home rig , I have a WD , and there were no probs installing it. Might be a problem with the HD? dunno. All these stuffs i have done with the dnld distro.

Exact error messages are the most inportatnt thin if you want to resolve this.

There are many threads on this theme. In my experience, downloading ISO's and burning your own CD's is a cheapskate route fraught with problems.

Buy one of the CD sets currently available on the net for this Distro. It'll only cost a few dollars so the hard way isn't worth it.

Sometimes if you had a utility to restore an OS (i.e., take a snapshot of a drive) it places those files in a protected mode on a drive and will not let anything overwrite them. Try a low level format.
And if you have a windows disk sitting around, try installing that. If it installs, you know the HD's are OK and the cdrom's need work.
