OKi Doki
One more try!
First my Hardware setup.
4 WinXp boxes
1 WinXP lappy
1 HP printer
ADSL Broadband
I have set up a LAN with the above using TCP/IP protocol
static IP addresses
printer sharing
file sharing
client for MS networks.
and workgroup.
1 box hosts the printer
1 box hosts shared internet connection using Wingate. and runs mail server.
All is honkidory!
So then I get this baby, my pride and joy.
2.5ghtz
120gig disc
256 ram
I love it, so much so that I decide to run LINUX on it as primary OS. XP is on it in a little corner of the disc just in case I need to run Certain apps that dont go on Linux.
OK so far?
Ok, running RH8.0 & KDE (personal pref).
Managed to setup and mount XP file system .
Now what I would like to do is see the rest of the network and interact as any other box, sharing files, printer etc.
Currently:
Can ping all the XP boxes.
Can access the internet via shared connection.(doing so now).
downloaded installed and can run xSMBrowser (network gui manager) as well as a link to run ' setup' in terminal.
Each XP box has a single user logon, name and password. ( dont know if thats relevant)
As a matter of interest when I type in a terminal 'locate samba'
I get among other file listings:
/var/log/samba/roland.log
/var/log/samba/emma.log
/var/log/samba/emma-jane.log
/var/log/samba/emma-louise.log
/var/log/samba/baby-emma.log
the names of the XP boxes have been ID'd and logged.
so i cant be that far away ( he thinks)
however
when running xSMBrowser I either get :
"unable to find Domain master"
or
"connection to local host failed.
Before I go on any further - I am not a network person, most of the techy speak is double dutch to me.
and
I do try to read and digest the help man's etc, but sadly, they just lead me round in ever decreasing circles until I'm looking up my own jacksy. so to speak.
1. should I be setting up/ altering anything on my XP boxes.
2. Domain master. Ive read what it is.... but I ain't come across it in setting up my LAN so far, have no clue as to where it resides.
My workgroup is EMM
IP range is 192.168.10.1-10
subnet 255.255.255.0
I dont understand much ( anything about mountpoints )
the samba conf file is double dutch, though i presume both 'setup' and xSMBrowser alter the conf file appropriately.?
Is there anyone there who can guide me through this tribulation. I only have a dozen or so strands of hair left.
I'm not Linux fluent, infact when one help file mentioned having to alter my profile, I took it personally :) and still didnt know what it was talking about, nor did it try and explain or tell me how and where i might find the file to alter it. An every branching tree of unanswered questions leading everywhere but the starting question.
Any way I digress.
Any easy to understand help would be much appreciated.
