okay so i have a week left until school is over and i go home. during this school i've switched to linux and don't ever plan on going back. however my parents use aol and will always use aol, there is no talking them out of it. so when i bring my computer home i'll need to get online. a computer without a connection is pretty much useless to me and i would be forced to go back to windows. is it possible to set up a network to share the connection using my parents computer to connect, or is there a better way?

Simple solution to the rubix cube. (ok I just dated myself here)

Broadband should not be a problem. I am going to make an assumtion here, since you did say this was broad band.

1. There is a broad band modem of some sort. This can either be hooked to thier computer via usb or thru cat5 cable and a nic. If they are using USB I don't have a clue. Cat5 and a Nic simple to set up and share.

Here is an great article on how to share a broad band. http://www.cable-modems.org/articles/internet_sharing/

I recomend the router approach since most of the ones on the market today do not automatically forward to the commonly exploited ports. This gives you an added layer of security.

My parents have AOL broadband, and it requires login via the aol software. You might need specific software like pengaol for dialup (I think that's what it is).

Hope we helped.

BTW AOL broadband has to be an oxymoron.

I'd see if you could talk your parents into switching off of AOL to another provider.

i tried a few years ago when i was in an "anti aol" phase, but now i realize it is probally the best isp for them. it does everything for them all in easy to use window. they don't want or need anything "better."
