I'm putting together a new computer and i'm planning on a fairly heavy system

my question is weather o not a standard 300W powersupply is going to be enough to power a box that's got all of the following in it?

AMD Athlon XP2400
512 DDR Ram
GForce 4 video
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
US Robotics v.92 modem (hardware based)
3com NIC
Adaptec ultrawide2 SCSI card
2 SCSI harddrives
DVD drive
CDrW drive
internal ZIP250 drive

plus keyboard, mouse and joystick

so... will 300W be enough or should i get something beefer?

thanks for your help

that's alot of stuff..it might work but may stress the ps a little. 5 drives is alot for a 300w ps i think, you might want to try a 350w or even 400

Especially with an Athlon XP 2400 and a GeForce 4 (unless that's a 4MX?) card.

Get something bigger.

I'm running 2 hard drives and one CD, an Athlon XP 1800, and a GF4 Ti4200, and it's stressing the 350W power supply pretty well. Power isn't dropping out, mind you, but the original PSU (piece of crap noname that came with the case) gave up the ghost a while back when my video card had some heat issues. Toasted a couple of the onboard capacitors, which caused the AGP voltage (the 3.3V signal) to start dropping as the thing ran longer. That one was fun to track down...

Anyway, I've got an Antec 350 in there now, and it's probably still a little stressed, but it's not giving out.
