Hi,
I am starting in the in world of Wireless networks. My intention is to connect myself to APīs nearby, an therefore to get Internet, but,... as i am a newbie in that matter, i registred myself in a users group. So far from what i understand, the great majority of the users are using wireless networks to work under Ms Windows. I was recommended to buy the D-Link DWL 900 AP, but advised that it can only be configured under MS Windows IE, therefore no support for our dear Linux. I made some investigations ... on D-Linkīs site ...and found that to be true. No drivers for Linux, and no configuration program ...also. I am using RH 9, and my point is to get an AP to fully work under Red Hat 9... if possible ...out of the box. Can anyone suggest a good piece of Hardware to work under Linux?? ... and a site to get it ???
Thanks!!!

Ya, D-Link is full of liars...
The DWL 900 AP does not require Windows, just a LAN to plug into

This is what I use at home, you need to plug the AP into your hub/switch and connect to it by using a PC on the LAN. Set the PC up so it is on the 192.168.1.* network (the default for the AP) then use a web browser to connect to it.

It's web based, no specific OS is needed. The hardest part with setting these things up is getting into it. If you have a WLAN card, it should see the AP without any configuration (built-in DHCP for wireless)

Yes, but you'll need to use a crossover cable (hubs and switchs do this for you, but card to card you'll need to make/get a crossover cable)

I think the default address on the D-Link is 192.168.1.50 (change this when you get a chance, I can still logon to my neighbors Linksys AP ;))

While were on the subject of wireless -what wireless PCMCIA cards can be made to fully work in Linux -I can only use my card if wep is off, otherwise it refuses to accept configuration such as essid -just let me know the card that works and I'll buy it...

tired of this error: "SET failed on device wlan0 ; Function not implemented."

It works on my Cisco 352 pcmcia card, however I used it with FreeBSD, but it should work with linux.
